The llms.txt generator.
Fill in your site name, a one-line summary and your key pages. You get a correctly formatted llms.txt you can copy or download, plus an honest account of what the file is and is not worth. It runs in your browser, so nothing you type is sent anywhere.

What an llms.txt file is actually worth
We sell AI visibility work, so read this as a firm arguing against its own easiest upsell. An llms.txt file is a small, cheap legibility signal. It is not a growth lever, and anyone telling you it is has not looked at the numbers.
had no llms.txt file at all. Adoption is low, which cuts both ways: the file is easy to be early on, and it plainly is not what separates the businesses AI names from the ones it ignores.
is everything an llms.txt file earns in our own on-site check. The other 85 points go to crawler access in robots.txt, structured data and meta basics, and those do more work.
Across the 137 businesses in our study with complete records from both ChatGPT and Gemini, on-site readiness barely tracked whether an engine named them at all.
Google has said publicly that it does not use llms.txt. That is the single most important fact about the file, and it belongs at the top rather than in a footnote. No major search engine has committed to reading it, there is no standards body behind it, and any tool that reads it today can stop tomorrow.
So why generate one at all? Because a short, accurate, machine-readable map of your own site costs you ten minutes, and it is the kind of thing some AI tools and documentation crawlers do read. It also forces a useful exercise: naming the five or six pages that actually answer a customer's question. Most businesses cannot list them.
What it will not do is get you recommended. Our own study of 300 Australian businesses found websites averaging 74.9 out of 100 for on-site readiness while the businesses behind them averaged 38.3 for AI visibility. The gap is not on your website. It is in whether anybody else on the internet corroborates what your website says.
If you want the file to be the smallest job on your list rather than the whole list, that is the correct instinct. Read why ChatGPT does not mention your business next, and the glossary entry for llms.txt if you want the one-paragraph definition.

Where to put it
The file goes at the root of your domain, not in a subfolder, so that it resolves at the address below. Upload it beside your robots.txt.
Your file belongs here
https://yourbusiness.com.au/llms.txtServe it as plain text. Most hosts will do this automatically for a .txt file, but if yours guesses wrong the content type should be text/plain; charset=utf-8. If it is served as HTML, or if the address returns your 404 page instead of the file, nothing can read it.
Two things it does not do, so that nothing here is oversold:
- It does not replace robots.txt. Crawler permissions still live there, and blocking a retrieval crawler there removes you from AI answers now.
- It does not replace structured data. JSON-LD on the page itself is what states your business facts in a form machines already act on.
The format this tool writes follows the llmstxt.org convention: a level-one heading with the site name, a blockquote summary, optional paragraphs, then level-two sections of Markdown links with short descriptions. A section named "Optional" is the convention's own signal that those pages can be skipped when a reader is short on context, so name a section that way if you want it treated as secondary.
Questions
llms.txt, answered
What is an llms.txt file?
llms.txt is a proposed convention: a plain-text file at the root of a website, written in Markdown, that gives AI systems a short summary of the site and a curated list of links to its most useful pages. The format is a level-one heading with the site name, an optional blockquote summary, optional detail paragraphs, then level-two sections of Markdown links. It is a legibility signal rather than an official standard, and no search engine is obliged to read it.
Does an llms.txt file help my business get mentioned by AI?
On the evidence available, not much on its own. Google has said publicly that it does not use llms.txt. In Answerable's study of 300 Australian businesses, 71% of the 300 had no llms.txt file at all. Across the 137 of those businesses with complete records from both ChatGPT and Gemini, site readiness barely tracked whether an engine named them, at a Pearson r of 0.116. We award llms.txt 15 of 100 points in our own site readiness check, and that is the honest ceiling: it makes a site easier to read, not a business easier to recommend.
Is llms.txt an official standard?
No. It is a convention proposed in 2024 and published at llmstxt.org, adopted by a number of documentation sites and developer tools. There is no standards body behind it, no major search engine has committed to using it, and any tool that reads it today can stop reading it tomorrow.
Where does the llms.txt file go?
At the root of your domain, so that it resolves at yourbusiness.com.au/llms.txt, and it should be served as plain text with a Content-Type of text/plain rather than as an HTML page. It sits alongside robots.txt and your structured data. It does not replace either of them, and both do more work for AI visibility than llms.txt does.
