Guide
How to show up in Google's AI answers.
AI Overviews and AI Mode now sit above the old blue links. This guide explains where Google pulls those answers from and how to earn a place in them.
For many searches, Google now leads with an AI-written answer instead of a list of links. Getting your business into that answer is one of the highest-value things you can do in search today.
What Google's AI answers are
There are two things to know. AI Overviews are the summarised AI answers that appear at the top of many search results, pulling together information from multiple pages. AI Mode is a fuller, more conversational search experience where you can ask follow-up questions. Both are Google answering on the searcher's behalf, and both can name or cite specific businesses.
Where the answers come from
This is the part that trips people up. Google does not build AI Overviews from a separate secret list. It builds them from its existing search index, the same web it already crawls and ranks. That means the foundations are familiar:
- You have to be indexed. If Google is not crawling and indexing your pages, you cannot appear in an answer drawn from them.
- Relevance and helpfulness. Content that directly and clearly answers the query is far more likely to be pulled into an overview.
- Structured data. Schema helps Google understand exactly what your content and business are.
- Trust and experience. Signals of expertise, authority and genuine first-hand experience matter, especially for topics that affect money or health.
- Local signals. For local queries, your Google Business Profile and consistent local details do a lot of the work.
The uncomfortable truth. There is no AI Overviews submission and nothing to buy. You earn a place by being indexed, relevant and trusted, then by answering the question better than the pages around you.
What to do
- Be crawlable and indexed. Fix anything blocking Google, and make sure your important pages are actually in the index.
- Answer questions directly. Lead with a clear, concise answer, then support it. Use plain headings that match how people ask.
- Add structured data. Mark up your organisation, products, articles and FAQs so Google can read them precisely.
- Strengthen trust. Show who is behind the content, cite sources, and demonstrate real experience.
- Nail your Google Business Profile. For local intent, complete and consistent profile details are essential.
- Cover the whole question. Answer the follow-ups a searcher would ask next, so you are useful across the cluster, not just one query.
- Keep it fresh. Update content so it stays accurate and current.
A note on Google-Extended
You may have seen advice to block or allow Google-Extended. It is a control over whether your content helps train and ground certain generative models, and it is separate from normal indexing. Because AI Overviews are generated from the search index, blocking Google-Extended does not, on its own, pull you out of AI Overviews. Understand both controls before changing either, and lean on our AI visibility overview if you want the wider context.
How to track it
Search the queries you care about and note whether the AI answer cites you, then watch how it changes over the following weeks. Because results move, the reliable approach is ongoing monitoring rather than a single check. A free scan gives you a baseline to measure from.
